There is no objectivity concerning the Second Republic.

The previous reviewer bemoans Preston's leftist interpretations, and he makes a point, but a misleading one. He seems to think that there exists some "objective" interpretation of the Republic and its demise--but there is no such thing.
The conservatives blame Caballero and the Anarchists, and the liberals blame the Army, CEDA and the fascists. Only by reading both sides can one understand the complexity of the period. Looking for a neutral interpretation of the Republic and Civil War is a fool's errand.
This book is largely a response to R.A.H Robinson's The origins of Franco's Spain: The Right, the Republic and revolution, 1931-1936 (Library of politics and society). That book is quite sympathetic towards the rightist groups under the Republic--esp. CEDA-- and by implication towards Franco and the July 1936 coup.
One key issue is how "fascist" were the rightist and conservative groups under the Republic, and to what degree they carried responsibility for the coup that resulted in horrifying war. To simplify, Robinson says the center-right was centrist; Preston says they were crypto-fascists. The same debate extends to the other side: were the Socialists violent revolutionaries, seeking to destroy traditional Spanish society, or were they social-democratic reformers? Preston presents them as reformers.
Read both sides, and make up your own mind. It was a very complicated period, with plenty of blame to go around.
This is one of the truly indispensable books on the Second Spanish Republic.

Left-biased

This is the second book by Preston that I read, and I felt dissapointed when I discovered that it was extremely left-biased. Minimizes the relevance of the raising of 1934, praises the behaviour of Largo Caballero and blames the CEDA for everything. He denies the existence of violence during the 2nd Republic and minimizes the responsibility of organizations linked with the PSOE with the violence. Of course the war was the responsiblity of the pro-fascist who delivered the coup and completed the raising, but pretending that the 2nd Republic was a modern democracy is simply out of the historical reality. Better to look for the responsibility of everyone in this war, where no good parties existed, only bad ones.
