Structural Engineering Giants

A collection of lectures given by a most distinguished group of structural engineers inluding Leonhardt, Happold, Schlaich, Horn and Davenport. Very easy to read and very hard to put down. Provides a well written, well thought out assesment of Structural Engineering past, present and a glimse of its potential future. A small book but worth its weight in gold.

Generally enjoyable reading for mature structural engineers

This small book is a quick and generally enjoyable read for the mature structural engineer interested in reflecting on the broader aspects of the profession (or rather reading the reflections of a few eminent colleagues).
The book basically consists of eight short essays, each by a different author. Their quality varies significantly, and I didn't find any of them to be particularly focused or systematic. In fact, a couple were downright rambling and bordering on incoherent.
However, the paucity of literature on this topic earns the book two stars just for existing, and the essays are generally good enough to add two more stars, giving a total of four stars.
I bought the book years ago, when the price was much lower, and I think it's worth what I paid. However, I would have been somewhat disappointed with the book if I had paid the current new price of over $100. At that price, I think the audience for this book is limited to structural engineers with a very strong interest in books of this type, or for whom cost isn't an issue.
