Paradigmatic Fifties paperback: Cheesy cover art and surprisingly good, action-packed stories

This was one of the first books I bought with my own money. I would like to think my ten-year-old self wasn't swayed by the cheesy cover art, but I probably was. Most of the stories, however, are pretty good; several are darn good. Here are the contents:

Journalism in Tennessee, by Mark Twain
Alone in Shark Waters, by John Kruse
Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, by Rudyard Kipling
To Build a Fire, by Jack London
Locomotive 38, the Ojibway, by William Saroyan
High Air, by Borden Chase
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, by James Thurber
The two stories that stuck most clearly in my memory over the years are the first and the last. "The Most Dangerous Game" is a classic of pulp fiction: a professional big-game hunter finds himself the prey of a suave but deranged Cossack who owns a jungle island in the Caribbean where he likes to hunt, and match wits with, "the most dangerous game" - i.e., other humans. Thurber's "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" is a classic plain and simple, and was for me an introduction to more sophisticated fiction, to literature even.
Mark Twain's contribution is among the best of his rough and rugged humor; "Alone in Shark Waters" was surprisingly good (I am also surprised that I didn't remember it from a half century ago); and "To Build a Fire" has triggered a desire to re-visit more of Jack London. Actually, I found all of the stories but two (those by Stephenson and Chase) worth reading -- or, in my case, worth re-reading.

A Collection of Classics

Richard Connell's The Most Dangerous Game has provided plots for dozens of movies, including a classic with the same name starring Joel McRea. Trapped on an island and hunted by your host...ClubMed with machine guns. Another oldie-but-goodie is Leiningen Versus the Ants by Carl Stephenson, resulting in a film that remains a favorite to this day with Charlton Heston...army ants swarm across a South American plantation, challenged by its owner who values intelligence over blind, hungry instinct. There are others including the near-surprising addition of The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, although Mitty's constant retreat into fantasies of adventure do qualify it for inclusion. Needless to say this comedy classic has withstood the test of time, filmed twice with great success, and, in retrospect, might be a sly comment on the stories that precede it. Other scenarios include Jack London's tense story To Build A Fire and Rudyard Kipling's story of battle between mongoose and cobra in Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, a tale of a sailor trapped in shark-filled waters, and Mark Twain's story of Journalism in Tennessee. Great collection.
