Aristotle unraveled

Sir David Ross' explication of Aristotle's philosophy is most helpful. Aristotle's works that have survived to today seem to be post-lecture notes, a sort of "here's what I covered in today's lecture" recap. As such, Aristotle's books are sometimes confusing, occasionally contradictory and often just plain difficult to understand. In addition, Aristotle was a scientist first and philosopher second. This makes his works, which we read for their philosophical content, more difficult to grasp in some cases. Further, as with any translated works, various translators convey Aristotle's assertions in different ways, some of them more useful than others.
Ross' deep understanding of The Philosopher, gained through years of study, teaching and translation, gives him the background needed to help the reader understand more clearly Aristotle's position on various subjects. Ross is able to reconcile some apparent contradictions, to point out some of Aristotle's underlying assumptions and make confusing passages clear.
As a graduate student in philosophy, I find Ross' work to be very helpful and expect to use it extensively as background material for my thesis. But the value derived from reading and understanding Aristotle is not limited to students or philosophers, and the value of Ross' book is wide-ranging as well. Aristotle will be helpful to students, teachers or lay readers interested in philosophy but struggling with some of the archaic attitudes presented in many translations of The Philosopher's work.

A classic review of Aristotle

Unfortunately I can not be extremely positive about this work of Ross. Still how you will benefit from the work will depend on your expectations. If you need some summary to draw upon in an undergraduate course, this work will be helpful. But the work will not give you real insight, either because it does not intend it, or simply because it can not achieve it. Sorry that I have to talk like this on a great scholar's book.

This is the international century, so it is most appropriate that authors from 5 countries came together under the expert partnership of Kruger & Riordan who have coedited an international anthology of worker sport (of which there is a chapter here in the book) before. The book is a perfect overview which would serve a university course well. All chapters (one exception on Afro-American sport) were written exclusively for the book, and some in fields not before explored: Kruger's history of homosexuality and sport is timely and superb: If the rate of homosexuality is 10 p.c. in sport, do the two football players on the field who are gay enjoy the tossing and tumbling differently than their straight co-players? His comparison of fascism and sport in Mussolini's Italy, Hitler's Germany and Franco's Spain shows that a lot was actually invented in Italy and later on refined by Germany. Wedemeyer puts terrorism and sport (Ireland, Palestinians etc.) into an historical context. Bill Murray (author of 2 world histories of soccer)is the best expert on the history of the international soccer organizations. Gudrun Doll-Tepper, president of the disabled organisations, gives a structural analysis of her sport.etc, etc. You name a world expert and you will find it in the book.

Concrete Techies Will LOVE this book

The methods, processes and controls described in this book used for quality assurance of concrete production may be "old hat" in EU and the UK but much of it is not practiced in North America. American Concrete Institute (ACI) Manuals of Concrete Practice are good references but this reference book is terrific. I have been associated with cement and concrete for more than 40 years and I still reference it every day. It provides insights to new entrants or seasoned technologists that are not available elsewhere. Incidentally, this book purchase represents a librairy upgrade for me from the previous edition by Ken Day.

Chilling Prophecy

The message of I Am Legend/The Last Man on Earth ("LMOE") is prophetic, in much the same way that, "The Time Machine" and "1984" showed us the terrifying future of declining, totalitarian western culture. When he wrote his book, Matheson could not have known of the coming, all-pervasive, mindlessness, "political correctness," and individual detachment brought on by immersion in technology, pseudo-science, media mind-control, and political group-think. Nor could he have foreseen the all-encompassing totalitarian state. Nevertheless, Matheson describes modern society.

The viral epidemic is an allegory for the spiritual, genetic and mental degradation of mankind. The dead come back to life. The dead are, of course, the soulless, mindless inhabitants of modern "progressive" society. One need only observe expressionless, lifeless drones walking the streets and driving cars, totally immersed in telephones/computers, etc., to see that there is little life in these seemingly human forms (who have an uncanny resemblance to the Eloi in The Time Machine.

Indeed, the "Vampires" are somewhat human in appearance, but noticeably crude, sickly and unintelligent. They are similar to the Morlocks in the Time Machine, and the know-it-all, Busybodies of modern totalitarian government. They seek to impose their will on others who are weak and vulnerable.

There is an antidote to the virus of societal ignorance and degradation, but it is only temporary. If one remains immersed in the filth and degradation of modern society, if one still clings to the "virus" inside, one can never be cured.

There are some, however, such as Dr. Morgan, who are mentally, spiritually and physically, strong. These few are able to fight the ignorance and destruction brought on by the virus of totalitarian "progressivism."

The most powerful clue to the meaning and lesson of the story is in the final scene. Morgan ends up on the Altar of a Church. There, the soulless barbarians sacrifice him to their own ignorance, creating images of the execution of Jesus Christ. The savages could not bear to allow a free-thinking, healthy man to survive. To the totalitarian progressive, all must conform or perish. And Morgan committed, perhaps, the ultimate sin against totalitarian progressivism; he sought refuge in God and the Church.

Thus, the man who possessed the cure to the virus and the key to the salvation of mankind was killed by those who refused to accept and hated the Truth. Matheson accurately predicted the destructive modus operandi of the Vampires running the modern, totalitarian state, and the acquiescence of healthy, but mindless citizens in their own destruction. Thus, the Last Man on Earth was killed in the same manner the modern government-media-political complex destroys the personhood and, when deemed necessary, the bodies of free men.

It was one of the first Horror Thriller movies I saw. And I loved it. But these two stories are so different from each other. The main character in the book. Robert Neville, he stuggles with his own inner demons during the DAY and at NIGHT has to deal with the haunting true. What's left of MANKIND. The ghosly World that Richard Matteson captures, is worth reading.

A Thought Provoking Novel

"The August Strangers" has nothing to do with a calendar month. It's about an interesting ethical dilemma involving a family man, Mike August, and adoption. To give away the plot would be wrong, but let me tell you that this book is equivalent to "My Sister's Keeper" by Jodi Picoult...one of the best ethical dilemma books I have ever read.

As you read through "The August Strangers", you will be asking yourself what lengths would you go through to save your son from a terrible death. Would you commit acts that would send you to prison to save his life? And what if your son was....I won't go any further. You have to read this book. Guaranteed to make you think. And please relish the surprise ending!!

This book asks great questions : If you were a father, and your son was ill and getting more ill, what lengths would you go to to save him? Would you give him a kidney of your own? But what about this....what if your son was adopted, and your blood type didn't match? Would you steal adotion papers? Try and find the real sibling? Kidnap the real sibling to save your son? This novel is an incredibly compelling read, an emotional story with a thriller edge. It follows the life of Mike August, the average man who is thrown into a life-changing situation where he has to ask himself these questions. I highly recommend this book.
