They relate to an area of experience that has for centuries been a recurrent preoccupation of philosophers and poets. This intermediate area, between internal and external reality, is intensely personal, since its existence depends, as does the use that can be made of it, on each individual's early life experiences. If children can utilize this realm to initiate their relationship with the world, first through transitional objects, and later through play and shared playing, then cultural life and enjoyment of the cultural heritage, will be open to them.

Winnicott was a strange, playful genius. The hugeness and flexibility he shows in this book is astounding. He's tossing around super-profound philosophical ideas like oranges and catching them in reverse order; leaving an idea undeveloped at the end of a chapter, and ending the chapter essentially with a good hearted laugh. I can almost see him laughing his way through certain parts of the text.

I give this book five stars because the ideas contained in here are going to continue to bear fruit in so many ways. We have been waiting for decades for someone to tie together the Neo-platonic strands in psychological thought, in contradiction to Freud and the radical empiricist strands, and Winnicott is the first to really achieve some headway in this area. You see, most people in psychology either think that our brains are like wax and we go around pressing them against things and putting indentations in the wax, whereas some others think that our brains are more like cookie cutters that chop out figures from raw experience. The former group are the empiricists (Freud), and the latter, the rationalists. (Piaget). This is especially important as we move into an era where psychotherapy is increasingly cognitive and rationalistic. Psychiatry and psychology training, in the wake of psychoanalysis's rationalistic errors of ignoring data and imposing a theory of sexuality on every case it came across, is unfortunately being repeated by people in the various schools of therapy. And it's really confusing for residents (like myself) to decide how much data to gather on a patient, and when to stop and apply a theory.

Winnicott teaches here that we in part, create reality and in part, discover it. Certain expectations we have come from our playful and interpersonal nature and we find ways to make the world conform to those expectations and desires. That does not mean those interpretations of the world are "illusion", meaning false, as Freud uses the term pejoratively. It simply means that a creative process is involved. But more importantly, after disagreeing with Freud so profoundly, Winnicott goes on to say that our expectations must also be let down repeatedly and conformed to reality as well. The infant does not only create the blanky-teddy, but discovers it in the real world, and gradually lets go of it, just as we all gradually let go of our parents, if we had healthy ones, that is... But the reality that we conform to is not the reality where all our expectations and illusions were dashed to pieces. They are merely modified to fit into a reality as Winnicott sees it, a reality of other minds and other persons.

Creativity and play

First of all, this book is written for psychoanalysts. One of the other reviewers clearly hated it and summarily dismissed it as "not even worth thinking about." For someone not used to reading dense psychological text, this book would be tough to follow. Honestly, Winnicott is hard to follow even if you are used to reading dense psychological text. He's not particularly concise and often uses certain terms without explaining them. For example, he speaks about the infant's need to "destroy" the transitional object, but also to see the object survive the destruction. I interpret that to mean something about learning object permanence, but he's never clear.

Having said that, I really like this book. It's a collection of essays and speeches and so isn't meant to be a completely coherent argument from start to finish. The chapters I like the best are where he develops his theory of play and creativity. In short, infants learn to distinguish themselves from their environment by having a "potential space" where it is safe to explore and play. Being able to be creative is how human beings discover their true, authentic self. And this is especially important for a developing infant.

Winnicott contributed a significant amount to the field of object-relations therapy. I really dig his work, and his theory of the significance of play in the work of analysis not only makes sense to me, but also adds a level of fun and creativity. His written work is dense, and most of it was published in journals, so it can be hard to sift through. But I like this book the best ("Human Nature" is second). The concept of discovering your true, authentic self through play and exploration is a pretty liberating idea even as an adult, and Winnicott provides some solid developmental theory here to back that up. If you're studying Winnicott or object-relations, this is a great book to read.

Family Mired in Darkness

If you’ve read any number of Lawrence Block’s detective stories or noir crime novels, you will be unprepared for “Ariel.” It is quite unlike any of the other books he has written. In it, we have a husband and wife (David & Roberta), their teenage adopted daughter (Ariel of the title), and their son (Caleb), born not long before the start of the story. They live in an old house that may have a ghost in it, a shadowy old woman seen by Roberta (and only her) just before she finds Caleb dead in his crib.

Although each character seems quite lucid and honest when placed at the forefront of the novel, that lucidity and honesty is called into question when other characters are given their voices. As Block works his way around the main characters, then starts to bring in minor characters who observe traits unknown to the others, the story, which seemed at first either a straight ghost story or a case of murder by a family member, becomes more complicated and ambiguous. In that twilight of ambiguity, which only grows murkier as the characters descend into madness, we find unrelenting psychological suspense and a mounting feeling of menace and horror. By sublimely manipulating characters and plot elements, Block has created a very disturbing story of a family’s journey into darkness, fear and suspicion.

This was not the usual Block tale. I started to not finish it, but having faith in the author, I did. This is the story of two very different children caught up in the madness and tragedy of two very flawed selfish adults. They are also surrounded by several slightly flawed but well intentioned adults. Add in one scary apparition a tragic death and you have a pretty good story. I recommend this highly

This book is a collection of five stories written by the Campbell Award nominees for 1976.

“Blue Champagne” by John Varley is an interesting view on reality TV, from a story written in 1980. It’s also fascinating that it contains as a major character an honestly portrayed quadriplegic without invoking pity as the primary motivator. Also this scathing quote about pop culture:

"They eat the sewage that floats on the surface of the mass culture, digest it, and then get creative diarrhea--all at once. The turd look and smell exactly alike, and we call them this year's fashions, hit shows, books, and movies."

“Entertainment” by M. A. Foster is a fascinating blend of post-humanism and seed-ship ethics.

“The Pilgrimage of Ishten Telen Haragosh” by Arsen Darnay is a bit too dense and incomprehensible to hook me. The great thing about anthologies is you can skip to the next thing without completely aggravating the OCD completionism compulsion.

The intro for the fourth story “Psiren” has a great quote from the author, Joan D. Vinge. "Archaeology is the anthropology of the past, and science fiction is the anthropology of the future." The story was an interesting look at telepaths and empaths and how they fit into a future dystopia.

I picked this book up to read the last published short story (“M is for the Million Things”) by Tom Reamy outside the collection San Diego Lightfoot Sue and Other Stories. The introduction to the story by George R. R. Martin says that it is a story that they workshopped together, and was one of Reamy’s first stories. Reamy’s intent was to revisit this story and flesh it out into something more epic and breathing like the novella “San Diego Lightfoot Sue”. I can only imagine how amazing that would be, as we only get the early glimpse and some horrifying impressions. The story is quite good, but I wish I could read the GREAT version that was to be(“They Sleep So Poorly While They Live”). The afterword analyzing the oeuvre of Reamy also makes picking up the collection worthwhile.

Excellent disclosure from the victim

It was great to hear the story of Travis Walton's experience from the guy it happened to. The low star review status was not a result of the reading but from the fact that I paid about $37 for a pocket book with a cover price of $1.95 on it. That's internet robbery if you ask me. Anyway, Travis paints a pretty good picture of the circumstances surrounding the abduction. Even the tree clearing job description leading up to the fateful night was interesting. As usual, the fickle public skepticism described over such an event is enough to make you sick once again. Me? The facts surrounding the case are impeccable and leave little doubt as to its authenticity. It happened the way they said it did because, damn it, they're NOT lying. The debunkers can take a hike!! Their efforts are, as usual, feeble at best. People just can't get over their long ingrained convictions about what they've been taught about life on earth. Once again, it shows how people are seriously hung up on their own long-ingrained perceptions.
I'm glad I finally read the book long after having seen "Fire In The Sky". My surprise was with the comparison to the movie and this was the fault of the movie maker. It seemed that the movie depicted fairly accurately, with the usual forgiveable story telling conventions, the overall mystery of the events and public suspicion surrounding the abduction. However, the movie scenes aboard the spacecraft are an extreme departure from what Travis claims to have experienced. It disappointed me that the movie took such liberty with the reported events and depicted such horrid procedures which Travis doesn't even come close to admitting. Quite frankly, when a movie departs that far from the reported truth I lose a lot of respect for the director/producer. It must have really pissed Travis off to see how they depicted his abduction experience just to make, what they no doubt, thought would make a better movie-going experience. If they would have told Travis's story the way he related it, it would have been every bit as compelling and had more credibility than what I finally determined the movie depiction deserved.
I must admit I was a little intrigued by the final chapter in Travis's book where he claims he MIGHT have experienced more than the two or so hours he recalls out of the five days he apparently spent aboard the craft. It sounded like he was about to reveal some deep secret but suggests that due to the warning that was revealed to him during deep regression, he should proceed no further. I got the impression he was suggesting that some serious, significant revelations were entrusted to him by the beings, but due to their warning of death, he couldn't reveal them. It sounded a bit like there was going to be a "part-two" follow up book in the works. Nevertheless, the report of his experiences are mind-boggling indeed and lend much insight into the ever-baffling UFO/abduction phenominon. I say, just remember this; if just ONE UFO experience can be proven absolutely true, then they might ALL be true!!! If you want to read of another's frustrating pursuit of the UFO truth then read Larry Warren's "Left at East Gate". Once again you'll likely admit there's no way so many could be affected by an event without it being absolutely, profoundly, undoubtedly TRUE!!

Good For Readers Who Know Nothing about the Walton Experience

If you have heard of but know nothing about Walton's experience, then you may enjoy this book. Walton presents the basic facts behind his story.

However, there is not much to present because Walton was knocked unconscious by a beam of light and simply woke up five days later. Anyone who wants detail of his abduction will be disappointed. There is none because Walton can not remember much of what happened.

Nothing against Mr. Walton, but if you have heard the basic details of this story then the book probably won't tell you much and is sure not worth the price that is being charged because the book is out of print.

I have heard Mr. Walton interviewed and I have read this book, and I think pretty clearly something terrifying happened to him. I admire the fact he does not make up a bunch of stuff to fill out the book. At $6 it would be easy to recommend, but at the prices copies are going for......No way.

Travis Walton is a very humble man who went through an extraordinary experience. He explains in great detail.

You won't be able to put this book down! The book is now going for a pretty price but I would highly recommend it! It is worth the price! The Walton experience is a MUST READ!!

A Good Primer for Pastoral Counseling and Psychoanalysis

I rate this book with three stars because it is slightly dated and officiously written. However, if you have any interest in pastoral counseling and psychoanalysis, this book serves as a good primer as it covers comprehensively many of the standard issues in these disciplines.

As it relates to the book seller, the book arrived soon after my purchase and its condition is commensurate with the seller's claims.

This book is very useful for trainees in psychiatry. It was recommended to me by my long term psychotherapy supervisor. It is a good introductory reading to the world of psychotherapy. The only thing I did not like about the book is the author not using many references when developing his ideas, although at some point he talks about the "obsession" of MDs to have "hard data" and that psychotherapists should feel comfortable dealing with ambiguity and limited scientific evidence given the nature of their practice.
